Capturing the emotions, thoughts of music’s finest, Jonene is 1/2 the brains and beauty behind Philly’s first DJ Day, in which she with the help of some people gathered and photographed Philly’s past, present and future DJ’s. Along with Kamau Stanford, Taddei urged the Mayor Nutter to make September 24th DJ Philly Day – which was solidified earlier this year. Taddei just opened up her digital website, which gives you just a tiny glimpse into her world. Below, you’ll see another view.

I can still say Happy New Year right? Well, Happy New Year then and welcome to the first official Wordplay in 2008 (Illit’s was done in 2007). The first person up is MC Scanz, whose album, ‘Prelude to a Legacy’ was released recently on Rawkus Records. I really knew nothing about dude, except I do remember liking one of his songs posted here awhile back. So, this was kinda a good introduction to what some call ‘the hottest new MC in Philly’. What to say about this one? Being short on time at the moment makes this a bit easier to write. Illit is someone I met a few years ago going to underground shows. I had no choice but to talk to him because it was those type of shows were there were only the same15 or so people. Anyway, it wasn’t until after a few times chatting that I realized he also rhymed. And it wasn’t until a few times after that I even realized his brother was DJ Cru Cut. Illit has been featured on a few releases the past few years and done a few performances in preparation for his solo project which is due out ummm…I dunno. But, it’s coming, I hear. Back in 2006 someone posted in the Music forums about Tone Trump asking if anyone had heard of him and what people thought. CLICK HERE The consensus seemed to be positive with critics saying he has a nice flow and that he is “the truth.” The West Philly native has established his name as a certified representative of the city’s hip-hop scene and that can be proven by his consistent radio and newspaper presence, as well as his community involvement. Tone Trump also holds a membership card to G-Unit Philly. So, what better time to get to know him a little bit more?

This week I had the pleasure of doing a Wordplay on the ever so polite, DJ Tactics. He was actually supposed to be featured like a month ago, but I completely forget, but it’s all good…here we go! Out of all the things that he has done, most probably know him as the DJ on 100.3 (THE BEAT) or Jay-Ski’s partner for the Pure Elementz Podcast. Besides this two accomplished efforts, Tactics also does a weekly live broadcast in New York for WBLS 107.5. I had no clue that Cimer made beats until months after I met him. I thought he was just another fan on the scene enjoying shows. Well, I was right, but there was a bit more to him. Actually, I’m still not sure of all the things that he does. I do know however, that he is half of the CAEN project, which pairs him with MC, Equinox. Aside from that success (they’ve been charting on college stations), he also has a nice production resume. I won’t bore you much longer. When I heard that MC Elixir was part of the Skratch Makaniks crew, I was slightly confused because I know he doesn’t know how to DJ. Or I don’t think he does. Then I was told he serves as the vocal element at the parties, hyping people up and keeping the energy of the crowd moving. Meanwhile, he continues to work on his album that will be out sometime in the near future. I caught up with him for a few seconds in hopes to reveal to you a little bit more about the voice on the mic.

As an admitted feminist I could easily turn this intro into some pro-women steez, but I won’t. Partially because the gender doesn’t really as much as her ability to rock a party. DJ Ultraviolet has made a name for herself spinning at all types of events around the city. She helped start up the bi-monthly Ladies Love Hip-Hop party and always makes sure to represent properly on the wheels. Coming straight outta Jersey, Caliph-NOW is a hard working man not only doing the producer duties, but also moonlighting as a DJ at times and working several jobs. Another thing that stands out about him is how supportive he is of local underground hip-hop. You can always catch him at shows nodding his head and standing in the front giving props to whoever is on stage. The name might not sound that familiar or you may not recognize the face right away, but chances are you have nodded your head to his beats. Josh is half of production team, Eyego/Direct, which he created with his brother Jake. They have beats featured on Reef’s last 2 studio releases, as well as his recent mixtape, Long Live the Cauze. Josh was also one of the featured producers at the third installment of Beats and Rhymes this past January bringing forth a catalog of infectious beats. When we did this interview, he had been up the night before making beats for hours. Sure, we could have discussed that, but ehhhh…..no! Cool, calm and collected is how Viro the Virus always appears – even on stage. Alongside producer, Caliph-NOW, Viro released his second album, Jersey’s Finest in February. He has a good chunk of guest collabo’s including Slim DSM and Reef the Lost Cauze, as well as producer credits from Stress, Eyego/Direct, and Decypher. Many count him as one of the premier MC’s to come out of Jersey in the last few years using his intelligent rhymes and storytelling as prime examples of where he gets that title. Because he works so much and lives on the other side of the river, there isn’t much time to kick it with him, except for events here and there, so I thought it’d be good to catch up with him. And that Serena and Venus question has to do with him claiming his love for Serena on the booklet of his first album, Future Trauma. I wonder if she ever responded? Anyway…enjoy!

And sure, it’s great to read about the artists and entertainers, but sometimes you want to read about the silent crew of the community: the promoters, the security guards, bartenders, web designers, soundman, girlfriends, boyfriends, and of course the fans who can make or break any concert or party.
